In this work, high-performance fluorosilicone rubber (FS)/organoclay (OC) nanocomposites were prepared by melt compounding process. The results show that the Young's modulus and hardness of FS rubber are improved with the introduction of OC, while the elongation at break and tensile strength are adversely affected. In addition, after the introduction of OC, FS still retains its specific properties as well as fuel and thermal resistance.
Preparation of FS/OC nanocomposites
· The materials used in this study include molding grade fluorosilicone rubber, natural montmorillonite modified with quaternary ammonium salt, 2,5-bis(tertbutylperoxy)-2,5-dimethylhexane (DBPMH) (used as a cross-linking agent).
· The materials were processed on a laboratory two-roll mill. First, FS gum was coated onto the rollers, followed by a gradual addition of OC. Once the materials were milled evenly, DBPMH (1.5 phr) was introduced. Four samples were prepared with varying amounts of OC: 0 wt% (FS-0), 2 wt% (FS-2), 4 wt% (FS-4), and 6 wt% (FS-6).
· Thin sheets of FS/OC, approximately 2 mm thick, were then cured in a hot press for 6 minutes at 170 °C (before post-cure samples) and post-cured in a convection oven for 4 hours at 200 °C (after post-cure samples).
