Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)/graphite composites have good tribological properties. This work studied the effect of micron graphite particle size on the mechanical and tribological properties of PEEK/graphite composites at a graphite content of 25 wt%. The results show that smaller graphite particle size effectively improves wear resistance and mechanical properties by improving interfacial bonding. With the decrease of micron graphite particle size, the wear rate of PEEK composites is significantly reduced.
Preparation of PEEK/graphite composites
· The melt index of the PEEK matrix is 24 g/10 min. Different particle sizes of micron graphite include 10 μm, 50 μm, and 150 μm.
· The PEEK powder was dried at 120°C for 6 h to remove moisture. PEEK mixtures with 10, 50, and 150 μm graphite were obtained by a twin-screw extruder at 380°C.
· The composites were finally manufactured using an injection molding machine at a barrel temperature of 390°C. The injection pressure was kept constant at 900 bar, the molding temperature was fixed at 180°C, and a constant injection speed was used for all composites.
