Description

PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a high-performance engineering plastic with outstanding resistance to harsh chemicals, and excellent mechanical strength and dimensional stability. It offers hydrolysis resistance to steam, water, and sea water. PEEK has the ability to maintain stiffness at high temperatures and is suitable for continuous use at temperatures up to 338°F (170 °C). This engineering plastic has a proven track record in challenging environments such as aerospace, oil and gas, food and beverage processing, and semiconductor.

Effect of Carbon Fillers on Electrical Conductivity and Tensile Properties of PEEK-Based Composites

This work compared the electrical conductivity and tensile properties of composites with three different carbon fillers (carbon black [CB], graphene nanoplatelets [GNP], and carbon fibers [CF]) added to PEEK. The results show that different formulations are suitable for different applications, such as electrostatic dissipative applications and conductive applications.
Formulations and applications of PEEK composites
· GNP/PEEK, CF/PEEK, CB/PEEK, and CB/CF/PEEK composites were extruded, injection molded, and tested for tensile and electrical conductivity properties.
· The following combinations of composites are recommended for electrostatic dissipative (ESD) applications: 15 wt% GNP/PEEK, 20 wt% CF/PEEK, 2.5 wt% CB/10 wt% CF/PEEK, and 2.5 wt% CB/20 wt% CF/PEEK.
· For electrically conductive applications (ER ≤ ~30 Ω cm), the following composites are suitable: 30 wt% CF/PEEK, 5 wt% CB/PEEK, 7.5 wt% CB/PEEK, 10 wt% CB/PEEK, 2.5 wt% CB/30 wt% CF/PEEK, 5 wt% CB/30 wt% CF/PEEK, and 7.5 wt% CB/30 wt% CF /PEEK (with the lowest electrical resistivity of 0.56 Ω cm observed in this study).
· The composite with the highest thermal conductivity (TC) recorded in this research is 0.52 W/m K for 7.5 wt% CB/30 wt% CF/PEEK, which is approximately double the TC of neat PEEK (0.25 W/m K). Increasing the TC would be advantageous for aerospace applications that require efficient heat dissipation.
