Lubricants Based on Nanoscale PTFE Particles

This work investigated the performance of nanolubricant formulations formed by adding nano- to micron-sized PTFE particles (50 nm, 150 nm, 400 nm and 12 µm) to a 150 N API Group II base oil. Results from experiments have demonstrated that the inclusion of PTFE particles can markedly enhance welding load, as well as improve anti-wear and friction reduction characteristics. Additionally, the smaller the size of the PTFE particles and the higher the concentration, the greater the performance improvements.
Preparation procedure of oil suspensions with PTFE
· The procedure for preparing oil suspensions containing PTFE involves the division of PTFE and parent oil into four equal parts, followed by mixing them with petroleum ether in a beaker and sonicated for a specific duration. Base oil is then added slowly and sonicated in installments. The complete blend is sonicated for an additional hour, allowed to cool, and stand for 7 days to ensure good suspendability of PTFE in the oil. The stability of the suspension is influenced by the sonication time, with 60 minutes identified as the optimum time.
· Nano-suspensions are also prepared by including nano-sized PTFE particles, with limitations on the amount of NPs due to agglomeration issues. One nano-oil is prepared with 6% nano-PTFE particles and designated as O_N2-SS6, while another is prepared with 4% nano PTFE and designated as O_N4. These nano-oils are compared with micro-oils containing the same amount of PTFE to evaluate their performance.

Preparation of PTFE/PPS Superhydrophobic Coating with Micro/Nanofiber Texture

A simple, traditional coating curing process is used to prepare PTFE/PPS with micro-nano binary structure (MNBS) roughness and lowest surface energy hydrophobic groups (-CF3) on engineering materials stainless steel or other metals. Experimental results show that curing temperature significantly affects the micro-nano fiber texture on the surface of PTFE/PPS superhydrophobic coating, resulting in excellent superhydrophobic properties at higher temperatures.
Preparation of PTFE/PPS superhydrophobic coating
· The stainless steel (1Cr18Ni9Ti) block underwent polishing using 500# and 900# sandpapers sequentially, followed by cleaning with acetone in an ultrasonic bath for 5 minutes.
· To create the PTFE emulsion (O/W), commercially available PTFE powder with low surface energy was dispersed in a mixture of 10 wt.% non-ionic surfactant and 0.5 M (NH4)2CO3 solution through ultrasonic stirring for 30 minutes.
PPS resin was chosen as the binding agent, which was then mixed into the PTFE emulsion and dispersed for 10 minutes to form coating precursors.
· The wet coatings on stainless steel or various metal substrate blocks were prepared by spraying the coating precursors with 0.2 MPa nitrogen gas and curing at temperature 150 °C for 1 h and 340~400 °C for 1.5 h.
· The thickness of the wet coatings was adjusted by controlling the spraying speed and the content of non-volatile components in the coating precursors.
